It was hard to believe that they were back at the place where it had all started. Had it really been a month and a half since she’d first seen Mark standing on the rocky beach without shoes? It didn’t feel as long as that, or that she’d known Mark for… well, forever. Her sense of time was skewed.

Susannah glanced up at the darkening sky and then towards her boyfriend. Unlike that first time, she hadn’t brought her surfboard with her. It was too cold for that now. “What now?”

She stood up from her place on the driftwood log and joined him, absently wrapping an arm around his waist. “Thinking again?”

Mark tucked a wayward strand of hair behind one ear and sighed. “I guess. That curse only lasted a year but now… I can’t imagine life without it, you know. I got used to having no choice in changing shape.”

“It’s over now, you don’t need to worry about that.” Susannah said. She bit down on her lower lip, wondering what she was going to do for university here. Most of the deadlines had already come and gone. And she needed more than diner job if she was going to pay for tuition. “Mom loaned me the money for the first month’s rent on decent place. Neither one of us can live with our parents much longer, Mark.”

She didn’t bother mentioning what had happened to Mark’s old apartment. One too many missed rent payments had ended with him collecting several cardboard boxes from outside the front door. “Shouldn’t you be thinking about school?”

He shrugged, staring out at the water and the setting sun staining it orange. “Dropped out of high school, I’ve got my GED.”

“That’s not a career.” Susannah rested her head against his shoulder, following his gaze. “Even Tristan has some skills. He’s a mechanic. What are you planning to do?”

“I’ve got potentially forever,” Mark’s voice was quiet. “Whatever I want, I guess.”

“Yeah, well… I don’t.” Susannah forced the sobering thought away. This was supposed to be their moment, not something wasted on her own mortality. “Forget it, we can worry about your knack for conning people later. Right now, let’s just enjoy the light while it lasts.”

Mark didn’t answer that, just gently tugged her in front of him and gave her a light kiss on the mouth. Susannah stiffened in surprise and then reciprocated, liking the feeling of warmth that travelled through her body. This had to be the first time Mark had willingly kissed her without being coerced into it first.

She enjoyed it.
Well, this took a turn from what I'd intended. But then the Christmas scene with Susannah,  her father and Mark did cover some of what was left hanging earlier. :) I apologize for taking more than a month to write this out.

I hope this came off as sweet and fluffy rather than bittersweet.

[edit] The last couple sentences could use a little work.

No worries, Caf--you definitely succeeded on the fluff factor! Though perhaps you might think of a way to fix the whole jobless thing. It strikes me as a bit of a loose end. All in all, though, this was a much better version of the story than its predecessor and I wholeheartedly commend you for it! Well done!
